Book lovers, rejoice. Join reading enthusiast for the 9th annual Austin African American Book Festival at the Carver Museum and Library today from 10am to 4pm. Featured authors include MK Asante, Dr. Kevin Cokely, and Beverly Jenkins. The event is free and open to the public.
The Austin Socialite caught up with festival organizer Peggy Terry she shared insight on what to expect.
This year's theme is the popularized and powerful hashtag BlackLivesMatter. Terry says the featured authors of the book festival have been selected because their work perfectly reflects the theme and its message.
"I think all of the authors in their own way support the theme," Terry said. "They may not have said black lives matter but they demonstrate through their writing that our lives and our stories are important.
According to Terry, the AAA Book Festival sets itself apart from other state festivals because of the intimacy.
"It's a smaller group and you have a little bit more of a chance to interact with the authors," Terry said.
AAA Book Festival attendees have opportunity to see authors that may not be featured at the Texas Book Festival. Three featured authors along with other authors will be in attendance. Some authors will be available for book signings, readings and book press opportunities.
Of all the featured authors, Terry tells us she is very excited to hear author award-winning MK Asante speak. Asante, a filmmaker, author and Renaissance Man is best known for his grippingly real memoir "Buck".
"I enjoyed his book," Terry said. "Personally, I'm looking forward to hearing Asante and finding out what he has going on in his life and what he's been reading. That's very high up on my list."
The AAA Book Festival is the perfect event to nourish your mind this weekend. Grabyour book bags and your stylish reading glasses because you won't want to miss it.
