Darice Chavira, a young 22 year old, has come to realize one of her greatest passions and talents in life: photography. She is a lens queen and has been reigning in Austin for four years.
Chavira became interested in photography when she was a junior in high school and took notice of her friends' photography. They inspired her to grab ahold of the nearest camera and start honing her royal skills.
"My dad owned a Cannon Rebel DSLR camera but he never used it," Chavira said. "So I was like you know what? I'm going to take advantage of this and start shooting."
She said she began taking still images of landscapes and food and later started doing senior portraits for her friends.
The lens queen didn't realize she was destined for the throne until others mentioned how great her work was. When she first started taking photos she didn't charge, but her family reassured her of her talent.
"It just kind of took off from there, and I started booking more clients." Chavira said.
Her raw talent shines through her work. In 2012, she submitted a photo she took and edited on her phone to Project Imagination, a photography contest presented by Cannon and directed by Ron Howard. She managed to become a finalist in the contest, demonstrating her natural flair for photography.
The lens queen is friendly and likes to incorporate her upbeat and positive personality into her shoots. She told The Austin Socialite she likes for her subjects to feel her personality at the shoots because it helps put them at ease.
"I like to make sure they're having fun; I like to goof around." Chavira said. "I'll strike a funny pose and try to make them more comfortable."
Chavira is currently working at Texas Monthly in a job that isn't directly photo related, but she said she would enjoy being a photo director for a magazine in the future. She told The Austin Socialite that no matter where her career path leads her, she will always be a photographer.
