ATX Cake Boss

8/12/2015

Every party needs a little Suga' to liven it up and that's exactly what Patricia Bedford, owner of Suga's Cakery provides. Her slogan is quoted from Julia Childs, "A party without a cake is just a meeting," and let's be honest, we'd all prefer a party to a meeting.

Suga's Cakery specializes in custom cakes, cupcakes, and cake pops. The cakery is a fairly new addition to Austin, but Bedford has been baking since 2010 when she enrolled in her first cake baking class. Bedford has been serving up treats since then and last October she officially got the business off the ground. To take her business to the next level Austin's very own cake boss created business cards, a website and applied for a DBA.

"I decided if I'm going to do this I'm going to do this right," said Bedford.

The cakery was inspired by her late grandmother, fondly known by her family as "Suga;" She said her grandmother always baked her family's cakes and when she passed she wondered who would be responsible for the family cakes.

Bedford majored in electrical and computer engineering at Baylor but her passion for baking has taken her life on a new path.

"Instead of tinkering with electronics I kind of tinker with cake making," Bedford said.

By making the cakes from scratch Bedford is able to customize the cake based on dietary needs, including gluten, sugar and dairy sensitive diets.

"I can customize to all those different types of diets," Bedford said. "And if not I can just make a delicious homemade cake. My cakes are baked from scratch with love. I love the people's reactions, I love making people happy."

Bedford currently caters to the cities of Austin and Dallas but says she plans to one day open a cake supply shop. She imagines it as a destination for everyone from commercial bakers to home novice bakers. The supply shop would also serve a store front for the business so soon we'll be able to walk in her shop and where you can purchase Bedford's mouthwatering baked goods.

"That's where we're headed. You've got to start somewhere," said Bedford.
